Wellbeing

At our school, student wellbeing and learning go hand in hand. We want every student to feel safe, included and ready to learn. Whether your child needs help with their mental, emotional, social or physical wellbeing, we are here to help them thrive at school and in daily life.

At Bald Blair Public School, we have introduced the ‘You Can Do It’ wellbeing program. The You Can Do It (YCDI) Education Program for children is a whole school approach to social and emotional learning.

This program will teach students skills that will help them to enhance skills and strategies to be happy and successful in school and build positive relationships.  Each week students will take part in ‘You Can Do It!’ lessons. In these lessons students will focus on a specific key.

The five core social and emotional keys taught in YCDI are:

As part of our ‘You Can Do It!’ program we have a positive behaviour reward system. Our symbol for positive behaviour is a star.

Star Bursts

Star Bursts are awarded to encourage and reinforce positive behaviours among our students. Teachers can award Star Bursts to students, whether they teach them or not. When awarding Star Burst awards teachers will use specific YCDI language and will be explicit in identifying and praising the skill/behaviour being demonstrated. Teachers can acknowledge students for practising behaviours that reflect one of the five keys (Confidence, Organisation, Resilience, Persistence, Getting Along) by using behaviour-specific feedback. For example, a teacher may reward a student using YCDI language such as “Well done. I can see that you have really persisted with that maths task! You deserve a ‘Star Burst’ award!” or, “Great work! That took confidence, and you weren’t afraid to make a mistake. You deserve a ‘Star Burst’ award”.

Students keep Star Bursts awards in their classrooms. When students receive a specified number of Star bursts, they will have a choice of:  prize box, a hot chocolate, hot lunch or a popper from the principal. Students will also take their Star Bursts award sheet home to share with their parents/carers.

Whole School Shooting Star Playground Awards

Students who demonstrate expected behaviours in the playground and at daily assemblies may be awarded a Shooting Star raffle ticket. A maximum of five raffle tickets will be awarded each session.

On Friday mornings a student’s name will be randomly drawn from the Shooting Star box, publicly praised for demonstrating the school values in the playground and they will have an opportunity to receive a prize from the principal’s prize box, hot chocolate, hot lunch or a popper.

Once the whole school target is reached the whole school is rewarded. The principal will work in collaboration with Year 6 leaders to decide on a whole school reward.
